GAS CRISES

GAS CRISES

LAHORE: Gas crisis worsened in Punjab on Sunday after the shortfall surged to 400MMCFD, forcing the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) to divert to the domestic sector a supply of about 275MMCFD, out of over 400MMCFD liquefied natural gas (LNG) meant for the industrial, power and CNG sectors.

Although the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is not as dire as in Punjab, consumers have started complaining about low gas pressure there as well.

The SNGPL claimed to have launched a campaign against those using compressors to extract gas in parts of Punjab and KP, causing low gas pressure.

At present, the company supplies around 1,400 to 1,500MMCFD to the domestic sector, which needs supplies ranging between 1,800 and 1,900MMCFD to meet the demand of about five million consumers in Punjab and KP.
LNG supply to industrial, power and CNG sectors cut to meet domestic demand

“Following severe cold, the situation appears to be tough these days. The shortfall has surged to 400MMCFD amid a demand of 1,800-1,900MMCFD, even though we have curtailed LNG supply to two major fertiliser plants, as many power plants and the CNG sector, and diverted it to the domestic sector,” SNGPL managing director Amjad Latif told Dawn.

The fertiliser plants — Fatima Fertiliser (Pvt) in Sheikhupura and Pak Arab Fertilisers (Pvt) in Multan — consume 90 to 100MMCFD of gas.

Likewise, gas supply to the Rousch Power Plant, the Abdul Hakim Power Plant (in Kabirwala and Khanewal respectively) and the Liberty Power Plant, in Mirpur Mathelo, has been suspended for an indefinite period.

“The Rousch Power Plant was being supplied 90 to 95MMCFD while Liberty consumes 40 to 45MMCFD... However, the supply to Liberty Power Plant has been curtailed on account of non-payment of bills... and not for overcoming the gas crisis,” the MD said.

He said the supply to other industries, including textiles, continued. The textile sector and other industries that have switched over to LNG are being supplied 100 to 150MMCFD.

But the supply to different industrial units in Punjab, which have not shifted to LNG despite repeated requests, was curtailed last month.

“The situation is really problematic these days and we are trying hard to ensure gas supply to at least domestic consumers during winter,” Mr Latif said.

To a question, he said the use of compressor by some consumers to extract gas was a headache for the company as it made it difficult to keep pressure. During the last 30 days or so, over 3,000 consumers in Punjab and KP have been caught red-handed for using compressors.

The SNGPL has cut connection of such consumers for three months.

“Keeping in view the situation, we have asked the federal government to amend the laws and provide judicial powers to the SNGPL to enable it to take stern legal action against those using compressors to extract gas,” the MD said.

After curtailment of gas supply, power generation of over 600MW by the plants (400 by Rousch and 235 by Liberty) has been stopped, leading to an increase in the electricity shortfall and enhancing loadshedding hours in parts of the country.

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi Refreshes Nation's Memory in Dunya TV Interview

Former Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi appeared in a TV interview on Dunya TV

PMLN is famous for building roads and does not shy away from taking full credit of it. They are known to even take credit for most of the work they have not initiated but have become a part of its completion. Known to remain in the spotlight through advertisements and displaying banners on Mall road Lahore, CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has become the most prominent politician of the country.

Former Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi appeared in a TV interview on Dunya TV and when asked the question about his performance in Punjab said, "I have built roads more than 37,000 KM in Punjab". When asked why doesn't the public remember those roads, he answered in the most humble way that his government's priority was to serve the people of Punjab and not use their tax money for personal glorification.
Dunya TV - Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi Refreshes Nation's Memory in Interview
Moonis Elahi, son of former CM Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has been a member of the Punjab Parliament since then and played an active role during his father's tenure. Being a young politician he was mostly assigned tasks which would help him understand politics of Punjab and hone him to become a good future leader.
Moonis Elahi wasn't present in the Dunya TV interview but was discussed more often in it.

During the PMLQ era, Punjab had a record GDP of 7.5% and people's lifestyle was greatly alleviated during that period. Moonis Elahi was tasked to learn as much as was possible and neither he nor his father ever used taxpayers money to glorify their acts of good governance. The former CM also recalled his social welfare projects and Rescue 1122 is one of their greatest gifts to the nation for it is a one of kind ambulance service which has the ability to cope with international standards.

Moonis Elahi pointed out Shahbaz Sharif works in a different fashion and he is known to sabotage or completely shut down the projects of his opponents without thinking about the effect it will have on the poor nation. PMLN's vindictive policy has done this country great harm but since their advertisements are too strong and targeted, people tend to forget the good works of the previous governments and think every positive work done is by the PMLN.

When asked during the interview by host Dr. Moeed Pirzada about the future of Moonis Elahi in future politicsChaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said that his son was ready to enter politics and he has matured now. It would not be wrong to say that among the young politicians, Moonis Elahi & Hamza Shahbaz are the only ones who have been a part of a government. Bilawal Zardari has now entered politics, holding rallies and delivering thunderous speeches but has zero experience of are the duties of a political leader.

Moonis Elahi Booked For Supporting Opposition

Alleging Moonis Elahi of sending truck load of sticks and party flags, Islamabad police have registered an FIR against him. As oppositions parties form alliance to pressurize incumbent Govt in corruption case and to force premier to appear before the court for accountability, situation worsens in the capital.

PMLN is all set to use brute force against protesters. Scores of police personnel have been shifted to the capital to restrict protesters from entering the capital. Instead of taking sensible measures to cope with the worsening situation, the Govt has resort to dictatorship tactics. Moonis Elahi being a parliamentarian sitting on opposition benches in Punjab has been targeted with prejudice.

Tax Money Being Flushed Due to PMLN's Vindictive Policy Against PMLQ

Tax Money Being Flushed Due to PMLN's Vindictive Policy Against PMLQ

Wazirabad CardiologyHospital a venture by PMLQ with no personal interest but to provide relief to the rural areas of Punjab which are forever forgotten by PMLN was a huge project for the region. It would have manage to save hundreds of lives every year but PMLN had other plans. It is their policy to undermine and staunch all progressive ventures by their predecessors.

Moonis Elahi has expressed grief over the Rs. 18crores loss by delaying the project simply because it was planned by PMLQ. People dying due to lack of health facilities is of no concern to the CM, he only invests in projects which would earn him a chance to photograph himself. Who needs hospitals when there are roads to be built that lead to places where PMLN has interests vested in.

Moonis Elahi - A Sign Of Hope For Farmers

PMLN's progressive policies revolve only around construction whether you need it or not and that too only in Lahore. They do not pay heed to other sensitive issues of the country such as Agriculture. Pakistan is undoubtedly has one of the best soils of the world.

  Moonis Elahi

Its fertility is unmatched and every year the crop produced is much more than the previous year's total count. Cognizant of the potential to export crops and earn revenue, PMLN still refuses to strengthen the agriculture sector and make it a burden sharing pillar of economy. Moonis Elahi is one visible politician who raises the concerns of farmers but it is only up to the CM Punjab to take action on it.

Moonis Elahi and PMLQ's Mega Project Lahore Sports City Axed by PMLN's Vindictive Policy

No nation can flourish unless it is provided adequate opportunities to earn freely. Roti, Kapra and Makan is not just a slogan to win votes, they are the very basic needs of every citizen of a country and unless they are provided with opportunities to earn them in a respectable manner a nation cannot progress. While the slogan was used in the past to arouse sentiments of the nation and simply gain attention for political gains, Moonis Elahi and the leadership of PMLQ actually tried to turn this slogan into a reality in the form of Lahore Sports City. Conceived by PMLQ in 2005, it was one such concrete effort to provide the city of Lahore with a sustainable source of decent livelihood. The mega project was not only aimed to further beautify Lahore, but to also provide a huge business opportunity to the city. moonis-elahi-youtube

Moonis Elahi's Vision on Growth and Development Moonis Elahi is a Wharton Business School USA graduate and strongly believes in sustainable development through achievable and measurable goals. It was due to his vision for growth and prosperity of the region that he participated actively with his father Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, leader of PMLQ in creating novel and highly profitable ventures and Lahore Sports City was also such venture.

The project was put on the table in the parliament and it was agreed that upon completion it would be able to create up to 100,000 annual job opportunities. The project was to be completed by 2011 and aimed to provide 20,000 homes based on contemporary architecture equipped with modern amenities can only be seen in the developed countries.   Foreign Investment To Fund The Project As Pakistan was progressing at break neck speed in all sectors, but still it suffered backlashes from the doings of previous governments. To make the project a reality, an unprecedented agreement was signed between the Punjab government and the brotherly Islamic country of United Arab Emirates (UAE). UAE agreed to invest Rs. 12 billion in the project which could ultimately make Lahore Sports City Asia's ultra modern housing project. It's proposed site was on the bank of river Ravi and the project spanned over 600 acres of land.

The idea to construct it by the historical river was to provide an added attraction and also to preserve the river. Being a firm supporter of environment preservation, Moonis Elahi played an important role to convince investors to set up a state of the art water purification plant on the river Ravi so as to introduce clean water instead of the sewage falling as of now. PMLQ's efforts had brought peace in Punjab making it a calm and visibly progressive province. Considering the various ongoing projects and their progress in the province, investors were obvious that Punjab was an investment friendly province. To his great disappointment, Moonis Elahi feels PMLN's vindictive policy to dump the project has denied a huge investment opportunity in Lahore.
